Green news for Malaysian based SMEs
500 Small and Medium Enterprises in Malaysia will get grants from the European Union. In a public and private meeting, the head of the EU mission to Malaysia, Mr Vincent Piket said grants amounting to 2 million Euros will be given to SMEs involving in biomass production. The program will be implemented in later in the year in two phases, the first is on awareness and the second will be concrete implementation of biomass production.

Biocon, with its expertise in fermentation technology, has signed an MOU with Malaysia's Biotechnology Corporation (BiotechCorp) to explore collaboration and potential investment in the bioscience applications. BiotechCorp will be using its satellite wing Bio-xcell, situated in Nusajaya, Iskandar Malaysia Region to spearhead the research and production of Biopharmaceutical products and formulations. Production is slated by the end of the year.

Glycos Biotechnologies Inc. to build Industrial Biochemical Plant in Bioxcell
Bioxcell Malaysia has got unto a flying start when renowned biotech firm Glycos Biotechnologies signed an agreement with BiotechCorp to set up a manufacturing plant in Iskandar Malaysia. There will also be a research and development center along the line. Glycos Biotechnology has expertise in the non-sugar, non-food fermentation technology. The agreement was announced at the recent 2010 Bio International Convention in Chicago. The partnership would see Glycos Biotechnologies working together with BiotechCorp to use microbial strains to further exploit the downstream activities in the palm oil based oleochemical industries in Malaysia.
One of India’s biggest biotechnology firms, Biocon, has announced that it will build a biotechnology factory costing US$323 million in Iskandar Malaysia’s Bio-xcell valley. It is also Biocon’s first oversea venture. Bio-xcell is a special development region in the Southern Malaysian State of Johor and the investment by Biocon will spearhead the beginning of high technology in the region.

New Bio-Xcell venture
US-based Glycos Biotechnologies (GlycosBio) and France-based METabolic EXplorer (METEX) is to develop and commercialize new uses for glycerin in Bio-Xcell in Iskandar malaysia. METEX is building its first crude-glycerin-based 1,3 propanediol (PDO) production facility in Southeast Asia with a step-by-step 50,000 tonne/year plant in Johor. It is understood the Malaysian Government will help finance the METEX project to the tune of 39 million dollars. Malaysia is a strategic location for the METEX plant as it would be able to access crude glycerine at viable market prices. The crude feedstock is derived from the production of biodiesel which mainly uses byproducts from the palm oil industry. World PDO is expected to increase 20% on a yearly basis.

Arcolabs at Bioxcell
Strides Arcolabs Ltd of India will start a manufacturing plant in Bioxcell. As one of the leading pharmaceutical film in India, Strides Arcolabs will pump in US 50 million in a plant that can produce biopharmaceuticals and sterile injectables. The agreement was signed in a ceremony at the Bio International Convention 2011 (BIO DC 2011) in US. The Arcolabs Project is expected to be in operation by 2013.

New Ethanol Plant at Bioxcell
An ethanol facility that will produce 10,000 tonnes a year is to be built through a joint venture between GlycosBio Asia and Malaysian Bio-Xchell in Johor Bahru, Indonesia. Glycos Biotechnologies, a biochemical company, will work with biotechnology developer Bio-XCell to fund the plant that will produce ethanol from crude glycerine. The project is due to be completed by the second quarter of 2013 and Toyo Engineering & Construction will be in charge of the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the project. Although expected to produce 10,000 tonnes a year at first, the project will be further developed over a number of stages before finally having a capacity rate of 30,000 tonnes a year.

Verdezyne is putting up shop at Bioxcell
Verdezyne has entered into a collaboration with Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation in its assessment of Malaysia as the destination for its first biochemical production facility in the Asia Pacific. After achieving success at its pilot plant, Verdezyne’ will be eyeing the Malaysian palm oil resources to further expand on its activities at Bioxcell, Iskandar Malaysia. Verdezyne is an industrial biotechnology company using proven and proprietary metabolic pathway engineering tools to develop unique yeast strains for cost-effective production of bio-based chemicals.
